With growing demand in media and entertainment industry, animation is now the most sought after career in India. International directors and production houses are also looking forward to Indian professionals for Hollywood productions.
Recently we have noticed a surge in talented applicants from myriad backgrounds who are willing to curb their niche in animation and VFX industry. Orthodox bangalis are finally seeking credible career alternatives for their children. Demand for animators in India in next 20 years is colossal. Animators today are required in several industries other than films and entertainment. Biomedical image processing is a forte enjoyed by skilled animation professionals.
Other industries like architecture/ real estate, manufacturing, automobile and even in space research.
Indian entertainment industry banks on animators and VFX artists. Even hollywood production houses are also relying highly on Indian animators. Post production of some of the legendary films like Shrek 2, Avatar, Gravity, Skyfall were done by Indian experts.
In 2015, india signed a co-production treaties with South Korea. India aready has similar agreements with China, Brazil, New Zealand and in Europe with Italy, Poland, france, Germany, Spain and the U.K. In 2016, Assemblage Entertainment completed its first full- length animated feature co-production titled ‘Blinky Bill The Movie’, with Computer Graphics Imaging (CGI) being co-produced out of its studio in Mumbai. And another studio, Digitales Studios entered into a multi project deal with U.S based Splash Entertainment for the Lionsgate franchise Alpha and Omega to be produced by Splash. DQ Entertainment and Method Animation, U.K have joined hands to co-produce TV series ‘5 & IT’. Sphere Origins (the original production house behind Balika Vadhu), animation studio HopMotion and Colours (GEC) have joined hands to co- produce new animated show ‘Chhoti Anandi’. Artha Animation is working with South African company MY Child TV in developing a new 2D animation series called ‘My Child’. Toonz Animation signed a deal with Gummybear International Inc which sees Toonz and Gummybear International, owner of the globally recognized Gummy Bear IP, extend the brand into entertainment and merchandising. DQ Entertainment will be co-producing the third season of ‘The Jungle Book’ along with France’s Ellipsanime and will be supported and co-produced by ZDFE, Germany; ZDFTV, Germany and PIWI (Canal+), France. Though there few shows and movies which were co-produced in India, the overall potential of this segment remains untapped.
